Conway Tearle (actually Frederick Conway Levy ; born May 17, 1878 in New York , New York , † October 1, 1938 in Hollywood , Los Angeles , California , United States) was an American actor . In the late 1910s and early 1920s he was at times one of the highest paid leading men in Hollywood.

life and career

The actor was baptized as Frederick Conway Levy. His parents were Jules Levy, a well-known cornet player, and the actress Marianne “Minnie” Conway. At the beginning of his stage career he took on the stage name Conway Tearle. At the age of 21 he impressed in the role of Hamlet and was soon on stage in London's West End. In the early 1900s, Tearle toured Australia, Ireland and the UK on numerous tours before making his Broadway debut in 1905 . He was denied great success, so he turned to film in 1914. He made his debut alongside Ethel Barrymore in the silent drama The Nightingale . Over the next several years, Tearle made 93 Films. He had his breakthrough in 1918 on the side of Mary Pickford in the drama Stella Maris . In 1923 he starred alongside Pola Negri in her US debut, the film romance Bella Donna , and appeared in the same year on the side of Corinne Griffith in the fantasy drama Black Oxen , in which Clara Bow played one of her first roles. At this point, it was past the zenith of its popularity, but could still ask for a weekly fee of $ 2,750. The actor managed without problems made it into the sound film and played regularly until his death in supporting roles.

In 1932 Tearle finally had the success he had hoped for on stage in the production of Dinner at Eight by George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber . His role was taken on by John Barrymore in the 1933 film adaptation . Both actors appeared together in George Cukor 's 1936 Shakespeare film adaptation of Romeo and Juliet .

The actor was married four times, most recently to actress Adele Rowland from 1922 until his death . His maternal half-brother was British actor Godfrey Tearle . Conway Tearle died of a heart attack in 1938 at the age of 60 after retiring from the acting business the year before due to health problems.
