Apamea on the Euphrates

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Apamea on the Euphrates (Greek: Απάμεια ) is an ancient city on the upper reaches of the Euphrates River near today's Birecik ( Turkey ). The construction of the Birecik reservoir made large parts of the city disappear in its floods.

The city was founded by the Seleucid king Seleukos I Nicator (312–281 BC) and is named after his wife Apamea. It lies across from Zeugma , with whom it is said to have been connected by a bridge.
