Apanayevskaya Mosque

The Apanajewskaja Mosque or Apanay Mosque ( Russian Апанаевская мечеть Apanejewskaja Metschet , Tatar Апанай мәчете Apanay mäçete ) is located in Kazan , capital of the Russian republic of Tatarstan , and is the city's second oldest mosque .

It was built by the Tatar merchant Jakub Sultangalejew between 1768 and 1771. Similar to the Kazan mosque al-Marjani , it was built with the permission of Catherine the Great , which allowed the Tatars to erect religious buildings. The name refers to the Tatar Apanayev family , a dynasty of wealthy merchants then residing in the city. In the 19th century, the Apanayevskaya Mosque was known for its madrasa , an institution for Islamic theology . One of the mosque's first imams was Salich Sagitov.

The reconstructed minaret (2007)

The architecture contains elements of the Russian “Moscow” baroque as well as Tatar decorative art. The architect is unknown.

On February 6, 1930, the Soviet government closed the mosque and the madrasah. After some changes to the building - the minaret was removed and an additional floor was added - the house served as a student residence for many years. In 1961, however, the building was classified as a historical monument.

In the early 1990s, the mosque was returned to the Muslim community, and from 1995 it was again accessible to the faithful. It was then restored for years. On December 2, 2011 it was reopened after the restoration was completed; The President of the Republic of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnichanow , and the Mufti of Tatarstan, Ildus Hasrat Faisiev , were also present at this ceremony .
