Rustam Nurgalijewitsch Minnichanow (born March 1, 1957 in Novy Arysh , Rybno-Slobodsky district, Tatar ASSR , RSFSR ) is a Russian politician and motor sportsman. He was Minister of Finance from 1996 to 1998 and Prime Minister of the Republic of Tatarstan from 1998 to 2010 . He was confirmed as the new President of the Republic of Tatarstan on February 4, 2010, and officially succeeded Mintimer Sharipowitsch Shaimiyev on March 25, 2010.

Minnichanow is married, the couple had two sons. The older son, Irek Minnichanow, died at the age of 24 in the crash of Tatarstan airline flight 363 on November 17, 2013 in Kazan . Three months earlier he had married a French woman whom he had met while studying in Switzerland .

Motorsport

Rustam Minnikhanov, known by his name in motorsport , is an avid racing driver in his spare time . He won the UAE Desert Challenge ( Rally Raid ) in the United Arab Emirates in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2006 (he was unable to participate in 2005 due to a broken foot) with a KAMAZ- 4911 truck , and won with a Ford Puma in 2004 and 2005 respectively third in the Autocross European Championship and denied with a Ford Fiesta ST T16 4x4 races for FIA Rallycross - European Championship for platforms 2006 . In 2007 he again took part in this pan-European racing series, this time with the same 550 hp four- wheel drive Citroën C4 with which 14-time European rallycross champion Kenneth Hansen was runner-up in the 2006 European RX Championship. For the RX-EM in 2008 and 2009, Minnikhanov had Hansen build a new Citroën C4.
