Apollonia (Eastern Greece)
Apollonia ( ancient Greek Ἀπολλωνία ) was a city in the Thasitic Peraia . It was probably made in the 7th century BC. Founded as Apoikia of the city of Thasos . Its exact location is unknown. According to Strabo , it was between Galepsos and Nestos . Pliny the Elder narrows the area further by saying that it is to be found between the River Strymon and Oisyme . For this reason it is believed to be in the tower of Apollonia . Also Pomponius Mela says that Apollonia was west of the Nestos. According to Titus Livius , however, the city was located between Maroneia and Abdera - about 100 km further east of the Tower of Apollonia.
Around 346 BC Apollonia was destroyed by Philip II . According to a legend, the city is said to have sunk into the sea 500 meters from the coast.
