The Tower of Apollonia or Tower of Eleftheres ( Greek Πύργος Απολλωνίας or Greek Πύργος Ελευθερών ) is a late Byzantine fortification from the 13th-14th centuries . Century. It stands on a hill directly south of Ethniki Odos 2 . From here one controlled the stretch of coast between the mouth of the Struma and the castle of Anaktoropolis . The town of Pyrgos, located about 700 m northeast, is named after the tower.
The floor plan of the castle is about 25 m by 25 m. The wall thickness varies between 1.20 m and 2.35 m. Inside there are foundations of some buildings. The tower has a base area of 10 m by 11 m and is located in the northeast corner of the castle. The access to the tower is in the south at a height of 2 m. In the past, a wooden staircase or ladder led to the entrance. First you went to the first floor. A ladder led to the basement. There were three more floors above. A church was built onto the eastern outer wall of the tower, of which the apse is still visible today.
designation
The tower was named after the ancient city of Apollonia , which was founded by Thasos . Strabo reports that Apollonia was between Galepsos and Nestos . It is not known whether the Tower of Apollonia actually stands on the site of ancient Apollonia. According to a legend, the city is said to have sunk into the sea 500 m from the coast.
