Apollonios Dyskolos
Apollonios Dyskolos ( Latinized Apollonius Dyscolus ) lived in Alexandria in the 2nd century and is regarded as one of the greatest Greek grammarians . He was the first to write a work on syntax that supplemented the Techne grammatike of Dionysius Thrax .
Apollonios was the son of Mnesitheus and lived his entire life in Alexandria ; nothing more is known about his life. He was nicknamed Dyskolos , which means "hardly to be satisfied", because of his irascible and highly analytical personality, and wrote extensively about talking. Of the twenty books mentioned in the Suda , four have survived: those on syntax , adverbs , conjunctions and pronouns . He had a great influence on subsequent generations of grammarians, including his son Ailios Herodianos .
In his work he deals with the parts of speech and their combination in the sentence, i.e. H. the syntactic connection. Among other things, the infinitive and the personal pronouns are examined in it.
