Apologos was an ancient port city in Mesopotamia , in what is now Iraq . It was an important port in the Charakene , which is mentioned several times by ancient authors. The city was re-founded under the Sassanids as a Schad-Schabuhr. In Islamic times it was called al-Ubulla. It is probably today's Ashshar, the port of Basra . Excavations have not yet taken place.
