Apostolicae sedis moderationi
Apostolicae sedis moderationi is a papal bull on canon law . She was founded by Pope Pius IX. published on October 12, 1869 and contains a number of modified laws, references and restrictions from the canon law that was valid until then.
Reorganization of canon law
Canon law, which had existed since the Council of Trent (1545–1563), had to be revised from the perspective of the Pope after almost 300 years of existence. "Apostolicae sedis moderationi" is the basis for the canon law passed in 1917, which in turn is the predecessor of the 1983 " Codex Iuris Canonici ". In his letter, Pius IX. concluded that it was in the interests of the Church's security and discipline that a correction should be ordained and disseminated. After all, doubts, worries and scruples led to the application of the references causing concern. It is therefore his wish to work out a thorough revision , which would lead to an end to all doubts and negative considerations. In close cooperation and after long deliberations with the cardinals of the Inquisition and questions of faith, he now decreed this new constitution, which in future would revoke the authority of the old canon and should be replaced by this new version.
The bull clarifies the procedure of how to proceed according to church law in the event of violations, and describes some new approaches. Administrative regulations are described. The bull also contains statements on the problem of Freemasonry . The reason for these new regulations was the large number of threats of punishment and the confusing catalog of punishments, which had accumulated over the centuries and led to different interpretations and applications. As a result, some offenses and their sentences have been confirmed or canceled and others have been modified or fundamentally renewed. Some measures were placed in the hands of the bishops , which made them feel more connected to canon law.
