Apple Network Server
Network Server (code name Shiner ) was a series of network servers from Apple , based on PowerPC 604 or 604e processors, which were operated with an adapted version of IBM's AIX operating system (the operating system was not included in the scope of delivery, but had to be purchased separately ). The network servers had six PCI slots, a network interface (10 Mbit / s) and three SCSI channels (two internal, one external). The network servers could also be built into a rack .
The network servers were introduced in 1996 and were available in three versions. Either with 32 MB RAM and PowerPC 604 processor with 132 (Network Server 500) or 150 MHz (Network Server 700) or with 48 MB RAM and PowerPC 604e with 200 MHz (Network Server 700). All models could be expanded to up to 512 MB RAM. All models were also equipped with a CD-ROM drive .
The production of the network server was discontinued in 1997. In addition to the "AIX for Apple Network Server", Linux / PPC also runs on the network servers .
