Apple Open Directory

The Open Directory is Apple's implementation of LDAP - directory service in Mac OS X . It stores and organizes information about the users and network resources of a computer network and enables network administrators to manage access to the resources.

The Open Directory was introduced in 2002 with the server version of Mac OS X 10.2 . With Mac OS X 10.6 , Apple provided the Open Directory Framework API , which enables MacOS applications to access the data in the Open Directory.
