Appleton Estate has sugar cane plantations and distilleries in Jamaica that have been producing rum since 1749. Different degrees of aging of rum are produced, sometimes very dark and molasses-rich, but without the very high-estrogen, fruity character typical of many Jamaican rums. It is the oldest growing company and distillery in Jamaica.

The sugar cane is harvested mechanically and partly in the old-fashioned way (with machetes ). The Appleton Estate cultivation area comprises more than 11,000 acres (45 km²) of land.

The parent company J. Wray and Nephew produces the Wray & Nephew White Overproof Rum .

history

Historic bottling in earthenware jug (1974)

The origins of Appleton Estate date back to 1655 when the British took control of Jamaica from the Spanish.

In 1957 J. Wray & Nephew was sold to a group of major shareholders of the Jamaican group of companies Lascelles deMercado , in 1989 J. Wray & Nephew became a full subsidiary of the group. In 2008 CL Financial , the largest private group of companies in Trinidad and Tobago and one of the largest in the entire Caribbean, acquired a majority stake in Lascelles deMercado, but ran into a liquidity crisis in 2009 and was nationalized as a rescue. In 2012, the Italian Gruppo Campari took over the majority of shares in Lascelles deMercado from CL Financial for the equivalent of 350 million euros, including the Appleton, Wray & Nephew and Coruba brands. There is an option of full takeover.
