The red-winged parakeets ( Aprosmictus ) are a genus of real parrots . They are closely related to the genus of the King Parakeet ( Alisterus ), which includes the Australian King Parakeet . In older literature, the two species that are now assigned to the genus of the red-winged parakeets can still be found with the generic name Alisterus .

Red-winged Parakeets are native to northern Australia, southern New Guinea and the Lesser Sunda Islands. They are compact, strong birds with predominantly red and green colored plumage. The broad tail is square and about a third shorter than the wings. Red-winged Parakeets show a sexual dimorphism . In the female of the red-winged parakeet , for example, the red portion of the plumage is significantly less than in the male. They are powerful and agile fliers. They predominantly live in the canopy of trees, although they occasionally come to the ground to drink or ingest fallen seeds or fruits.
