The Lednice Aqueduct and Grotto ( Czech : Akvadukt a Jeskyně ) is a staffage structure in the park of the Lednice Castle (German: Eisgrub ) in the Lednice-Valtice cultural landscape and is thus part of the UNESCO World Heritage .

Geographical location

The building is located by the castle pond in the park of the Lednice castle. There is a visual relationship between the castle and the aqueduct.

Building

The building was erected between 1805 and 1811 under Prince Alois I of Liechtenstein , a time when the park of the castle was transformed into an English landscape park. The aqueduct starts from a rock artificially piled hill, in which there is a cave. From here it led the water over eight arches to the edge of the castle pond, into which the water poured with a waterfall. The technology for operating the system came from Gabriel Burda and is no longer operational today. The executing architect was Joseph Hardtmuth . The grotto was added in a second construction phase. It contains a cenotaph . A detailed design from Johann Jakob Wagner , who published it in a 1797 issue of the magazine Ideenmagazin for lovers of gardens, English gardens and for owners of country estates , was adopted.
