Aquhorthies House

Aquhorthies House , also House of Aquhorthies , Aquahorthies House or House of Aquahorthies , is a villa near the Scottish hamlet Burnhervie in the Council Area of Aberdeenshire . In 1972 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists, initially in category B. The upgrade to the highest monument category A took place in 1988.

history

Almost 200 years after the Reformation in Scotland , the Scottish Roman Catholic Church returned to Aberdeenshire. Aquhorthies House was built between 1797 and 1799. It served as a seminary and was the only Catholic seminary in Scotland due to the simultaneous closure of Scalan College upon completion. After Blairs College was built near Aberdeen , the seminary was closed in 1829. The interior was subsequently redesigned.

The simply designed Aquhorthies House is about a kilometer northwest of Burnhervie a short distance north of the left bank of the River Don . The masonry of the three-storey villa with a mansard floor consists of granite blocks . Its main facade, which is exposed to the south-east, is seven axes wide. Aquhorthies House closes with a slate hipped roof . with hipped dormer windows .
