ar-Rashidiyah

Coordinates: 33 ° 14 ′ 12 ″  N , 35 ° 13 ′ 5 ″  O Ar-Raschidiya ( Arabic الرشيدية, also Rashidieh ) is a camp for Palestinian refugees in Lebanon . It is 5 km south of Tire .

The warehouse consists of an old and a new part. The old part was built in 1936 for Armenian refugees . UNRWA built the new part in 1963 for Palestinians who previously lived in the Gouraud evacuated camp on the Bekaa plain . Most of the residents are originally from Deir Al-Qassi, Alma an-Naher and other villages in northern Palestine . During the Lebanese civil war , the camp was fiercely contested, especially between 1982 and 1987, and was badly damaged. Around 600 buildings were partially or completely destroyed and over 5000 people were left homeless. The remaining buildings need a thorough renovation.

Most of the buildings have water, electricity and their own toilets, but the warehouse has no sewage system. For UNRWA, a prerequisite for the construction of a sewer system is the possibility of a connection to a main sewer. In 2013, with US $ 4.5 million provided by the KfW Reconstruction Loan Corporation , apartments and water pipes were repaired.

More than 31,478 people live in the camp. The age structure is:

  • 0 - 12 years: 23%
  • 12 - 25 years: 27%
  • 26 - 40 years: 24%
  • 41 - 60 years: 19%
  • over 60 years: 9%

Employment opportunities in the warehouse are limited. Outside the camp, Palestinians are denied access to many professions due to Lebanese law, and they are also prohibited from buying or bequeathing property, such as land. Most of the residents work as seasonal workers in construction and agriculture. Palestinian refugees in Lebanon are completely prohibited from working in a total of 73 professions; the Lebanese authorities are reluctant to issue work permits for other professions because applicants from other countries are preferred.

There is a health center and four schools in the camp, including a secondary school. Lessons in the refugee camps are often carried out in two shifts due to the lack of space. UNRWA can only grant a few university scholarships: in 2000 there were only 84 for all of the 376,000 Palestinians in Lebanon at the time. Although the health care in ar-Raschidiya is better than in other camps, the chronically ill, leukemia or dialysis patients or epileptics are insufficiently cared for become.

Politically, the camp is clearly controlled by Fatah . There is no Hamas office , it only enjoys sympathy from a small number of the residents. The strong presence of the Fatah movement has long been a guarantee that it could be kept out of the current conflicts and that there was no room for criminals and extremists. Also noteworthy is the low distribution of weapons in the camp.
