Ar-Rutba ( Arabic الرطبة, DMG ar-Ruṭba ) is a city in Iraq . It is located in the western part of the Iraqi governorate of al-Anbar . Ar-Rutba is located on a higher plateau. The city is located on the strategically important trunk road 11 , which connects the Iraqi capital Baghdad with the Syrian border and the Jordanian capital Amman . history
Ar-Rutba was a stopover for the British airline Imperial Airways before the Second World War. The plane “Uiver” (“Storch”) , which took part in the MacRobertson air race , crashed on its first flight after the race 16 km south of Ar-Rutba in December 1934 , killing seven people (including Dutch media entrepreneur Dominique Willem Berretty ). During the Iraq war , the US 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment was in the place . In 2014 ar-Rutba was captured by the Islamic State organization as a result of the uprising in Anbar . In June 2014 there were further military clashes in the area between the Islamists and the Iraqi armed forces.
