Ar Log is a Welsh music and folk group that uses their songs to introduce Welsh folk and dance music to the audience. For this reason, their song lyrics are also written in Welsh .

Band history

The band was formed in 1976 by Iolo Jones (violin), Dave Burns (vocals, guitar), Dafydd Roberts and his brother Gwyndaf (harp, flute) after they were invited by the Welsh Committee of the Festival Interceltique des Cornemuses , Wales Representing at the Celtic Festival in Lorient and playing traditional Welsh music together. When they got there, the festival committee asked them to come up with a group name. The quartet chose Ar log , which translates as “to rent”. Ar Log's goal is to bring Welsh folk and dance music to a wider audience, which is why the group uses a variety of traditional instruments such as the Welsh triple harp .

The debut album gave its name and was well received, but led to the departure of Dave Burns and Iolo Jones in 1980. Geraint Glynne Davies (guitar) and Graham Pritchard (violin, mandolin) were added instead. Davies took on Burns singing role, heavily influenced by Freddie Mercury (Queen). Two albums, Ar Log II and Ar Log III , were recorded by this quartet before the band expanded with the addition of Stephen Rees (accordion, violin and keyboards).

In 1982 and 1983 the band went on two tours with well-known traditional artist and politician Dafydd Iwan . On these tours two more albums were created, Rhwng Hwyl A Thaith and Yma O Hyd . In 1983 they released the instrumental album Meillionen ( Kleeblatt ).

The following year the album Pedwar was recorded, still in the line-up with Graham Pritchard, who left the band, however, and was replaced by the returning, former band member Iolo Jones. The album Ar Log V was then created in this composition .

In the 90s, the band only performed occasionally, as all band members were doing their jobs.

In 1996 Ar Log celebrated their 20th birthday and recorded the studio album Ar Log VI on this occasion . In 2007 another best-of recording followed, Goreuon: The Best of Ar Log .

In 2016 the band celebrated their 40th anniversary.
