The ballet Arabesque ( Bulgarian Балет “Арабеск” ; internationally also known as Arabesque Contemporary Dance Company ) is the largest Bulgarian contemporary dance company . “Arabesque” ( aʀabɛsk ; “in Arabic style”) describes a ballet pose named after the arabesque ornament (see the ballet glossary ). The troupe has over 120 productions and has over 35 appearances a year on Bulgarian stages alone. The international guest performances include various state theaters in Europe, the Philippines, India, Indonesia, Singapore, the USA and Zimbabwe. The main stage of the dance company is the Sofia State Theater .

history

The ballet Arabesque was initiated in 1967 in Sofia as an experimental dance studio. Ballet soloists such as Krasimira Koldamova (Красимира Колдамова) or the prima ballerina Vera Kirova (Вера Кирова) were among the founders . International recognition was made possible by working with foreign choreographers such as Alberto Alonso, Irzi Nemechek and Rallou Manou.

Under the 20-year leadership of the Bulgarian choreographer Margarita Arnaudova, Arabesque developed into a well-known dance company in Eastern Europe . During this period the troupe built its international foundation by working with choreographers such as Luc Boui and Dmitry Bryantsev.

Between 1995 and 1998 Kalina Bogoeva took over the direction of Ballet Arabesque. She initiated and organized the Arabesque competition for young choreographers in memory of Margarita Arnaudova.

The prima ballerina Rumyana Markova headed the dance company between 1999 and 2000. Since 2000 the choreographer Boryana Sechanova has been the artistic director and director of Ballet Arabesque. The consistency in the openness to international contemporary tendencies can be seen in the collaboration with choreographers such as Liz Lea and Wayne McGregor , Roger Jeffrey (USA), Liuk Bui (Belgium) or Volha Kastsel (Germany / Belarus).
