Type Stratovolcano

Aracar is a stratovolcano in northwest Argentina , east of the Argentine- Chilean border. It lies on the edge of the Puna de Atacama, a high plateau east of the Atacama Desert.

The summit crater has a diameter of 1 to 1.5 kilometers and contains a small crater lake. The volcano was formed during three eruption cycles, dating back to the Pliocene . Several lava flows cover the lower slopes of the volcano. There are reports of possible ash eruptions in the summit area on March 28, 1993, which can be seen as far as the village of Tolar Grande about 50 km away. To date, however, it is unclear whether it was an eruption or just dust clouds as a result of a rockfall.
