The Arachne Browser ( Arachne is Greek for spider ) is a free web browser for DOS -based operating systems . A version for GNU / Linux is still in the development stage . In addition to surfing the World Wide Web , Arachne can also be used as an e-mail program , feed reader and IRC client .
Arachne has very modest hardware requirements and runs partly already on computers with 8086 - processors . The browser has a graphical user interface and can access the Internet via modem or network card.
Arachne supports the graphic formats JFIF , PNG , BMP and animated GIF files. The browser mostly understands HTML 4.0 and CSS 1.0 and supports tables and frames. FTP , NNTP for Usenet forums, Internet Relay Chat , RSS , POP3 and SMTP are protocols that Arachne supports out of the box . Arachne includes a TCP / IP protocol stack . Most Internet settings can be made via the browser (dial-up and Ethernet connection). JavaScript and SSL are not currently supported.
