The horned garden spider ( Araneus angulatus ) is a species of the genus of garden spiders .

features

The males are up to 10 mm long, the females reach a body length of 15 to 18 mm. The brown-gray colored species has two humps on the upper side of the abdomen. Between these bumps there is usually a more or less clear light spot. The top of the opisthosoma is covered with a leaf drawing. The heavily spiked legs are gray and brown ringed. The sternum has a bright stripe.

Similar species

Araneus circe can only be distinguished from the horned garden spider by sexual characteristics, but is mainly found in southern Europe. Araneus nordmanni is much rarer, smaller, and has no light stripe on the sternum.

Occurrence and way of life

The species prefers open forests, its network is particularly common in pine forests. The spider usually does not stay in the web, but in a hiding place. From there it is connected to the network via a signal thread. Due to an exceptionally long bridge thread, its web cannot be confused with the web of other cross spiders.

Spread and endangerment

The horned garden spider is found throughout the Palearctic . It is rarely found in Germany. The species is classified in category 3 (“endangered”) on the Red List .

Meaning in the nomenclature

Araneus angulatus is the first animal species to be given a scientific name in Linnaeus' binomial nomenclature , making it the very first validly described animal species in modern science.
