Arawa is a city in Papua New Guinea , in the autonomous region of Bougainville on the island of Bougainville , the northernmost of the Solomon Islands . It is located approximately 990 km from Port Moresby , the capital of Papua New Guinea.
In the Bougainville conflict, the city was almost completely destroyed, which is why its function as capital was given up and relocated to Buka . Arawa had 36,443 inhabitants (census in 2000, 1980 there were 12,623) and in 2011 there were still 2,769 people living in the city.
Arawa has a health center and bank.
