Workers and Peasants Faculty Dresden
The workers and farmers faculty of the Technical University of Dresden is a building in socialist classicism at Weberplatz 5 in Dresden - Strehlen . The "baroque-classicist entrance emphasis" is one of the examples of the "great portal architecture of Dresden". The wall paintings by Wilhelm Lachnit are also remarkable . It was built in "sandstone plaster architecture" and decorated with sculptures by Wilhelm Landgraf and Gerhard Markwald .
description
1950 to 1964 the ruins of the former teachers' college from 1906-1910 and 1929/30 were built according to plans by Heinrich Rettig, the building of the workers and farmers faculty (ABF). The building consists of a complex of different buildings. The three-storey building on Weberplatz rises above a high basement and ends in a high hipped roof. On the hipped roof there is a roof turret for ventilation of the building. A bell cage with two bells is attached above the air outlet opening with a circular decorative grille. Four animal figures are grouped around the belfry: a crocodile, a wolf, a billy goat and a fish. The facade has a front length of fifteen window axes, with the middle showing a "baroque-classicist entrance emphasis". The entrance can be reached via a large staircase flanked by two statues. In front of the entrance there are four pillars that support an architrave . On the architrave there is a cornice with arbor , which has a wrought iron grille as a parapet. A tall and very wide window leads to this arbor, flanked by a tall, narrow window on the left and right. Sandstone jewelry frames the windows. The building on Teplitzer Strasse has a large tower. The three over- portals from 1955 in the large hall of the main building (former assembly hall of the teachers' seminar, later reading room of the ABF) come from Wilhelm Lachnit.
history
From 1949 to 1961 there was a workers and farmers faculty at the Technical University of Dresden . This was supposed to prepare the children of workers and farmers for scientific studies. Thereafter, the cultural studies of the TU Dresden used the building on Weberplatz. Today the building at Weberplatz 5 is the headquarters of the Faculty of Education at the TU Dresden .
When the workers and farmers faculty was founded in 1949, the buildings on Weberplatz were still destroyed. The ABF was housed in a former school building on Cottbuser Strasse in Trachau, which also served as a teaching and boarding school building (eight-man room). In 1951, the company moved to the partially rebuilt complex Teplitzer Strasse / Weberplatz and the first two new boarding schools on the corner of Zellescher Weg and Teplitzer Strasse.
