The Red Army Workers and Peasants ( Korean 로농 적위 군) are a paramilitary organization in North Korea.

history

The organization was founded on January 14, 1959 by Kim Il-sung . On September 28, 2010, the organization was renamed from Workers-and-Peasants Red Guards to Workers-and-Peasants Red Army men by a resolution of the 2010 Conference of the Labor Party of Korea .

A series of postage stamps was issued for the 55th anniversary of its existence in 2014 .

Members of the Red Guards

The Worker and Peasant Red Guards do not report to the Korean People's Army , but to the DPRK State Affairs Committee ( known as the National Defense Commission until June 29, 2016 ) and the Ministry of People 's Armed Forces . The organization is structured according to the provinces and cities or villages in North Korea. In addition to the armed groups, there are also unarmed groups, for example for logistics. Their tasks are similar to the fighting groups of the working class in the GDR and the people's militia in Czechoslovakia .

Members

It is the largest civil armed unit in the country with over 5.7 million members. The organization is open to men between the ages of 17 and 60 and women between the ages of 17 and 30. They must commit to Sŏn'gun (“military first”), Kim Il-sung, Kim Jong-il and Kim Jong-un, and socialism .

Lineup

There are brigades , battalions , companies and platoons .

Weapons and vehicles

The members mostly have weapons that are lighter than those of the KVA. As vehicles there are z. B. Katyusha and Ural brand motorcycles from Irbitsky Motozikletny Zavod .
