family

Maria was the first-born daughter of Grand Duke Mikhail Pavlovich Romanov (1798–1849) and Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna (1807–1873), formerly Charlotte of Württemberg . Through her father, she was the granddaughter of Tsar Paul I and niece of Tsars Alexander I and Nicholas I. She was named after her paternal grandmother, Tsarina Maria Fjodorovna ( Sophie Dorothee von Württemberg ). The Grand Duchess had four other sisters. Katharina (1827-1894) was the only one who survived. Elisabeth (1826–1845) died in childbed at the age of 18 and the two youngest sisters Alexandra (1831–1832) and Anna (1834–1836) died as children.

Maria grew up with her sisters in Saint Petersburg . She was her mother's favorite daughter, who was particularly interested in getting Maria well educated. Their upbringing was the responsibility of governesses and tutors. She received lessons in music, dance, etiquette and courtly conversation. She also spoke their mother tongue Russian and English , German and French . Her father, Grand Duke Paul, who wanted a son all his life, gave his daughters Maria, Katharina and Elisabeth the command of a cavalry regiment.

Maria had never been in good health. She was considered more sickly and frail than her sisters. She showed the first signs of tuberculosis at the age of 20 . Since she was now of marriageable age, Maria accompanied her sister Elisabeth and her mother on a trip to Europe. Grand Duchess Elena hoped to find suitable spouses for her two daughters. After visiting some cities, they settled in Vienna.

death

On November 19, 1846, Maria died of tuberculosis in the arms of her father, who had previously traveled to Vienna. She was 21 years old. Her early death came as a shock to the family, especially Grand Duchess Elena, who suffered from grief after Maria's death. The body was transferred to Saint Petersburg and buried in the Peter and Paul Cathedral .
