Working group for the protection of the Aare

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Working Group for the Protection of the Aare (ASA) is a Swiss nature conservation organization that is active in the cantons of Bern , Solothurn and Aargau .

purpose

The working group demands that the rivers at the southern foot of the Jura be left in as natural a state as possible. She wants to achieve this goal by supporting renaturation , revitalization and ecological enhancements. Her area of activity includes the course of the Aare between Lake Biel and the confluence with the Rhine and its tributaries.

history

The organization was founded in 1964 with the primary goal of preventing the then planned Transhelvetic Canal . In this project, the entire Aare from its confluence with the Rhine to Lake Biel would have been made navigable. It is largely thanks to the efforts of the ASA that this project did not find sufficient political acceptance.

Later the ASA concentrated on preventing the further damming of the Aare with additional run-of-river power stations. She gained regional fame through her long struggle against the expansion of the power station in Wynau . A decision about this project has not yet been made.
