Geoarchaeology Working Group

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Geoarchaeology Working Group is an association of around 200 scientists from Germany and neighboring countries who primarily belong to the disciplines of physical geography , geomorphology , archeology and geosciences . The aim is to raise the profile of the geoarchaeological discipline in German-speaking countries in research and teaching.

The largely interdisciplinary working group is a member of both the German Society for Geography (DGfG) and the Society for Scientific Archeology - Archaeometry (GNAA).

With Christian Stolz ( European University Flensburg , geography) and Christopher Miller ( University of Tübingen , archeology) the working group has two working group spokesmen from different disciplines.

history

The working group was founded in May 2004 during the international Eastern Mediterranean / Near Eastern Geoarchaeology Meeting in Tübingen. The first annual conference took place in 2005 at Thurnau Castle near Bayreuth . The offices of the two working group spokesmen were held from 2005 to 2015 by Markus Fuchs ( University of Bayreuth , now University of Gießen , geography) and Katleen Deckers ( University of Tübingen , archeology).

activities

When the working group was founded, there was no comparable institutionalized discipline in Germany or in the neighboring German-speaking countries, although numerous geographers and archaeologists were successful in the field of geoarchaeology. The working group meets every year at a different German university.
