The Bad Königshofen Archaeological Museum in Grabfeld is an archaeological museum in Bad Königshofen in the Lower Franconian district of Rhön-Grabfeld . The museum is a branch of the State Archaeological Collection in Munich.

history

The museum was established in 1988 in the Alte Schranne , a former granary of the Würzburg monastery from 1693. The museum is supported by the Archaeological State Collection Munich, which also takes care of the scientific supervision of the exhibits.

The museum for cross-border commuters has been located in the rear building since 2006 . Between June 2017 and May 2019, the building was completely renovated and technically upgraded and reopened with a completely revised exhibition. Since the renovation until 2019, both museums have been structurally connected with one another through an intermediate wing and in terms of content through the topic of "Borders".

The focus of the exhibition is the prehistory and early history of eastern Lower Franconia , particularly the Rhön and the grave field .

Mainly archaeological finds from the region are shown, which prove the close cultural ties between prehistoric and early historical people. The highlights of the collection are rich hoard finds from the Middle and Late Bronze Age , grave furnishings from the Hallstatt period , finds from fortified hilltop settlements, the additions of a federal grave from Hammelburg and the Thuringian aristocratic burial ground of Zeuzleben from the Merovingian period .
