Archaeosyodon is an extinct genus of synapsids from the group of Dinocephalia . Within the Dinocephalia it is assigned to the Anteosauria , a group of four-legged carnivores . Fossils are dated to the Middle Permian and come from the Perm region in Russia . The only species is Archaeosyodon praeventor .

Archaeosyodon is known for six fragmentary skulls and other isolated skull bones. All finds come from a single site in the Ocherskii district . The genus was scientifically described for the first time in 1960 by Pyotr Konstantinowitsch Tschudinow ; Another, more extensive description followed in 1983.

features

Archaeosyodon differs from other representatives of the Anteosauria in a number of primitive features, including extensive dentition of the palate. The snout was bulbous - a feature that is only found in Sinophoneus among other Anteosauria . Unique features are also found on the teeth; for example, the canines were short, wide and strongly curved backwards.

Systematics

Archaeosyodon's family relationships are unclear. In the past it was assigned to the Syodontidae ( Iwachnenko , 1994) or the Titanosuchidae (Iwachnenko, 1995 and 2003), a group outside of the Anteosauria. A more recent analysis by Christian Kammerer (2011) classifies this genus as a representative Anteosauria, but outside of the Syodontinae, which he declared as a subfamily .

The following is a current example of a cladogram, simplified according to Kammerer (2010):

  Anteosauria

 Microsyodon

 Archaeosyodon

 Syodontinae (e.g. Syodon )

 Anteosaurinae (e.g. Anteosaurus )
