Archibald Douglas, 8th Earl of Angus and 5th Earl of Morton , called the Good (* approx. 1555 - † August 4, 1588 on Smeaton near East Linton ) was a Scottish nobleman and in 1578 Lieutenant-General of the realm .

Life

Archibald was a son of David Douglas, 7th Earl of Angus , and his wife Margaret Hamilton. He followed his father in 1558 as Earl of Angus , and in 1581 also his uncle James , who had raised him after the early death of his father, as Earl of Morton .

Because of the support of his uncle, he was charged with high treason in 1581, but pardoned again a year later, to shortly afterwards with King James VI. To fall from grace again. Archibald was banished from court and fled to England. In 1585 he invaded Scotland, together with the Earl of Mar and Lord Glamis, and was able to conquer Stirling Castle , thereby getting hold of the king and thus gaining considerable influence over the government.

Archibald left no heirs from his three marriages. He was followed by his distant cousin, William , as the Earl of Angus . The title Earl of Morton fell to a William Douglas from another branch of the family, still under the terms of Archibald's uncle James Douglas.
