" Archimedes to the three drawing boards " (originally: "Archimedes to the three drawing boards" ) is a regular Masonic lodge founded on January 31, 1742 in Altenburg .

history

The lodge was founded on January 31, 1742 as the 7th lodge in Germany (after Hamburg, Dresden, Berlin, Bayreuth, Breslau and Leipzig). The Dresden grand lodge " Aux trois Aigles blancs " (German: "To the three white eagles") gave it the name "La Loge aux trois planches à tracer - The lodge for three Reiss boards". It was the first lodge in Germany that did its temple work in German rather than French. On April 9th, Prince Ludwig Ernst of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, brother of the ruling Duke Friedrich II , was admitted. In 1746 the first German songbook for Freemasons was written by the lodge member Ludwig Friedrich Lenz, entitled “Freemason Songs” . The title page shows Archimedes with the inscription "NOLI TURBARE CIRCULOS (meos)" (German: do not disturb my circles). In 1775 the lodge joined the recently founded Great State Lodge of the Freemasons of Germany in Berlin and Duke Ernst II of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg was elected State Grand Master . From 1786 the lodge was named "Archimedes zu den drey drawing boards".

In 1798, brother Johann Friedrich Pierer recommended the establishment of a library. He became chair master in 1801, worked out a new ritual and drafted his own constitution, which was adopted in 1803. In 1802 a plot of land was purchased for the construction of the still existing lodge house in Johannisgraben, which was inaugurated two years later. In 1803 the "Journal for Freemasons" was published and a deputation lodge was set up in Gera . In 1808 the "Literary Society" in Altenburg signed a lease with the lodge. In 1812 Johann Friedrich Pierer ended his twelve-year chairmanship. His son Heinrich August Pierer , owner of the Hofburg printing house and founder and editor of “Pierer's Konversations-Lexikon” became a member.

In 1813 the brothers von Blücher , Scharnhorst , Gneisenau and Ribbentrop , Prussian officers on duty against Napoleon's troops, took part in a temple work. In 1820 a brother association was founded in Eisenberg . From 1823 to 1828 the "Journal for Freemasons" appeared. In 1824 a Logensparkasse was founded, which still existed at the beginning of 1900 under the name "Altenburger Sparbank". In 1831 the lodge decided “that the Israelites should not be refused admission to the covenant in principle”. In 1842 the lodge celebrated its centenary. By then it had 642 members. In 1846 the "Journal for Freemasons", which had been published since 1803, was renamed "Freemasons' newspaper".

In 1863 a new lodge constitution came into force, at the same time the lodge was declared a legal entity. In 1892 the lodge celebrated its 150th foundation festival with the participation of 165 guests from other Orientals and 3 grandmasters.

The last Masonic work took place in April 1933. On November 14, 1935, in the presence of two Gestapo officers, the lodge forcibly dissolved. After 1945, despite the efforts of former Archimedes members, no new lodge could be founded, as Freemasonry remained forbidden in the GDR .

In 1992 former members of the lodge founded the Masonic association "Archimedes zu den 3 Drawing Boards". On November 18, 1999, the association was reactivated as a Masonic lodge by the Grand Lodge of the Old Free and Accepted Masons of Germany (District of Baden-Württemberg).
