San Lorenzo Archipelago

The Archipelago San Lorenzo ( Spanish Archipiélago de San Lorenzo ) is a Mexican archipelago in the Gulf of California in the state of Baja California . The islands are part of the metropolitan area of Mexicali , although they are hundreds of kilometers south of the mainland part of the city and instead directly opposite the coast of the municipality of Ensenada (municipality of Bahía de los Angeles ).

It is separated from the mainland of Lower California by the Canal de Salsipuedes . It includes the islands of Salsipuedes (1.029 km²), Las Ánimas (4.006 km²) and the main island of San Lorenzo . The entire area is combined to form the Marino Archipiélago de San Lorenzo National Park (32.058 km²) and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004 , see List of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in America . The total area of ​​the uninhabited archipelago is 37.093 km².

The islands of Rasa (Raza) (with the small island Raisto or Roca Raza ) and Isla Partida , located 10 and 18 km northwest of Salsipuedes, are still part of the national park, but are no longer part of the geographical group of islands.
