Archive of the Munich labor movement

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The archive of the Munich labor movement eV collects testimonies and documents from the everyday life of working people, the labor movement, the new social movements and industrial culture in Munich. Important goals are

  • to save the history of working people and their organizations from oblivion.
  • To protect, preserve and archive contemporary testimonies and documents from decay and destruction.
  • to make the archive holdings accessible to the public through exhibitions, lectures and publications.

In events and publications, the archive seeks to critically examine the past and present. The view of the labor movement is therefore not limited to the history of organizations and parties, but also includes social and everyday history.

In 2010 the archive received the complete holdings of the "Archive 451". This involved all of the publication activities of the former Trikont publishing house .

Founding history and tasks

The archive of the Munich labor movement eV was founded in 1987 . The impetus for this was provided by the exhibition “Up to the light - workers singers and workers athletes in Munich before 1933 ”, organized by the cultural department of the state capital of Munich and the DGB district of Munich.

Since then, the archive has taken on the task of securing, archiving and presenting over 150 years of social history of working people and their organizations. The history of the "common people" in Munich is documented in letters, documents, memoirs, photographs and everyday objects, thus illuminating important aspects of the city and regional history. The collection, processing and cataloging also make the archive holdings accessible for scientific research.

The long-term goal is to found a Museum of Labor in Munich. The work of the archive is supported by the cultural department of the City of Munich.
