European Archives of Psychiatry and Clinical Neuroscience is a psychiatric and neurological journal from Springer-Verlag .

In 1868 Wilhelm Griesinger founded the Archive for Psychiatry and Nervous Diseases to compete with the General Journal for Psychiatry, which is run by “institutional psychiatrists” . The journal was supposed to promote a more modern psychiatry based on university psychiatry. Although Griesinger died in 1868, it became one of the most important psychiatric journals. From 1869 Bernhard von Gudden was editor together with Carl Friedrich Otto Westphal .

From volume 68 (1921) to 178 (1944) the publication appeared in the meantime as a journal for the entire neurology and psychiatry . From volume 234 (1984) to 239 (1989) it was called the European Archives of Psychiatry and Neurological Sciences .

According to the ISI Web of Knowledge , the impact factor in 2014 was 3.525, which puts the journal in 47th place out of 192 journals in the clinical neurology category and 38th out of 140 journals in the psychiatry category .
