Ardagast
Ardagast or Ardagastes ( ancient Greek Ἀρδάγαστος Ardagastos ) was a Slavic military leader who acted between 584 and 593 in Wallachia in what is now Romania (see Landing of the Slavs in the Balkans ).
Ardagast was first mentioned in 584 when he advanced with Slavic fighters into the Byzantine Empire up to Constantinople , where they were repulsed (see also the Balkan campaigns of Maurikios ). In 585 the Slavs reached Adrianople , where they were put to battle by Byzantine troops.
In 593 the Slavs invaded Thrace under Ardagast, whereupon Byzantine troops advanced across the Danube into his area and took many prisoners. Ardagast barely escaped. There are no other reports of him; apparently he was no longer able to act after the heavy losses during the campaign of 593.
