Ardeshir Mahdavi (2017)

Ardeshir Mahdavi is an engineer and building physicist . He is the head of the Institute for Architectural Sciences and the Department of Building Physics and Building Ecology at the Vienna University of Technology . In addition, he heads the master's degree in “Building Science and Technology” at the Vienna University of Technology.

Life

Ardeshir Mahdavi is a graduate engineer ( M.Sc. ), doctor ( Ph.D. ) and completed his habilitation in building physics at the Vienna University of Technology (TU Vienna), Austria . He was a full professor in architecture and building physics at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh , USA . He has more than 70 Ph.D. Supervised students and 150 Master of Science students.

Ardeshir Mahdavi teaches introductory and advanced courses in building physics and building ecology, as well as scientific research methodology.

research

Ardeshir Mahdavi conducts research in building physics and building ecology, computer simulation of building performance, energy-efficient and sustainable building, building informatics and automation as well as human ecology .

Scientific contributions by Mahdavi include, for example, the development of an extensive ontology for building data, the design and implementation of a simulation-based predictive building control methodology, investigation and modeling of the urban microclimate including the Urban Heat Island phenomenon, work on probabilistic room acoustics methods and the development and evaluation of Presence and behavior models of building users.

Mahdavi mostly works on different research questions at the same time. A key question that he has pursued over the past 15 years is concerned with models of building residents, their presence, their requirements, their perception and with evaluation methods of their behavior and actions. Another research area deals with the challenges of creating models of urban microclimate and urban energy flows. He has also worked on the onthological aspects of building modeling.

Mahdavi is the author or co-author of more than 140 journal articles, 550 conference papers, and 70 academic texts in book chapters and research documentation. He is a frequent keynote speaker at a wide variety of international conferences, such as IBPSA, CLIMA, PLEA, CIB, BAUSIM, BSA, CAAD Futures, eCAADe and ECPPM.
