Ardtalla Farm

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ardtalla farm is an agricultural farm on the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . It is the only surviving and inhabited building in the Ardtalla settlement and is categorized in the Scottish List of Monuments .

description

The Ardtalla Farm was established in the early years of the 19th century, when several inhabited buildings still existed in Ardtalla (in 1841 there were 58 people in Ardtalla). The buildings are arranged on three sides around a rectangular inner courtyard. The exception to this is the residential building, which is attached to the previous building on the fourth side facing away from the inner courtyard and at right angles. This building has two floors and, like the other buildings, ends with a gable roof . The only exception here are the one-story stables with a floor at the northeastern end, which have a hipped roof . The facade of the residential building is plastered in the typical Harling technique. The stables are made of quarry stone and limed.

Today the Ardtalla Farm is at the end of the road that leads from Port Ellen via Lagavulin and Ardbeg along the southeast coast. Due to its isolated location, it is not connected to the power grid. Among other things, a holiday home has been set up there.
