Lagavulin ( Gaelic : Lag a 'Mhuilinn ) is a small scattered settlement on the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . It is located about three kilometers east of the Port Ellen ferry terminal and 16 km southeast of the island's capital Bowmore on Lagavulin Bay on the southeast coast of the island.
Lagavulin itself consists of only a few houses. In 1861 there were 77 people in Lagavulin, who were divided into 17 families. Of these, 75 were born on Islay and two men were of English descent. The whiskey distillery Lagavulin , which is now part of Diageo, has been located in Lagavulin since 1816 and made the name of the settlement belonging to Port Ellen known worldwide.
The name Lagavulin (pronounced: Lagga-wuulin , from Gaelic Lag a 'Mhuillinn) means "the trough of the mill" and means something like "trough in which the mill stands".
