Argos is the debut album by the Mainz retro-prog band Argos . It was recorded in 2008 and released in early 2009 via Musea Records .

Style and reception

On “Argos” the trio indulges in the Canterbury sound of the 70s with the support of guest guitarist Rico Florczak, who would later join the band as a full member . Bands such as Caravan and Soft Machine , but also The Beatles , are often named as significant influences .

The album consists of three parts, each paying homage to a particular style of music from the 60s and 70s. Part 1 (“Nursed By Giants”) is dominated by classic progressive rock in the style of Gentle Giant and Van der Graaf Generator , part 2 (“Canterbury Souls”) is carried by the Canterbury sound. In the third part (“From Liverpool To Outer Space”), Beatles reminiscences can be heard.

In terms of the lyrics, the album is a bow to the musical role models:

"Caravan and Soft Machine and Hatfield and the North "

- Young Persons Guide To Argos

The main negative point of criticism is often the caravan-oriented song; Nevertheless, the album was largely able to convince reviewers, for example Dave Sissons from the Dutch Progressive Rock Pages awarded 8.5 out of 10 possible points.

December 6, 2009, accessed on June 17, 2010 : “Musically you are on well-known paths: You can hear a varied blend of retro-prog and Canterbury, with Caravan and Hatfield and the North as influences that caught my eye . While Canterbury's inspiration predominates over long stretches of the album, there are also tracks like Black Cat , which are used by retro-prog bands like The Flower Kings and The Tangent , which are themselves clearly influenced by the Canterbury sound.
