action

When Gabriella accompanies the handsome Reid to his apartment, she imagines a nice evening for two. Only when the door is already closed does she see the many eyes. Eyes that watch her die. Years later, the battered body of a young woman is found in Miami. Detective Manny Alvarez tries to solve the murder and a suspect is quickly found. Prosecutor Daria DeBianchi charges the man. But suddenly a video appears in which another woman is mistreated and killed. The two cases seem to be related. In the course of the investigation, more and more bodies are found. Alvarez remembers an incredible story that the serial killer Cupid told him several years ago - an international snuff club. High-ranking and influential members of society reportedly pay money to watch people die via livestream. As the evidence thickens, William Rupert Bantling aka Cupid is said to be a witness. Meanwhile, the detective and the prosecutor get closer. Due to a mistake, Bantling finally manages to escape and suddenly other lives are in danger. Daria DeBianchi disappears and falls into the hands of the snuff club. Meanwhile, Cupid is chasing his former accuser, CJ Townsend. Townsend manages to lure her pursuers into a trap. Terrified to death, Bantling reveals details about the snuff club. DeBianchi's body is found and CJ wants to return to Miami to assist her former colleagues in the investigation.

Reviews

  • "Guaranteed to follow in the best-selling footsteps of Cornwell, Reichs and Slaughter." (The Guardian)
  • "Gripping, well-crafted suspense ... a belter of a book." (Sunday Express)
  • "Hoffman writes like an angel. Outstanding." (Independent on Sunday)
  • "Hugely readable." (Daily Mirror)
  • “The most exciting thing about this violent pornographic nonsense about a club of women murderers in Miami is the legal subtleties of the author, who used to work as a prosecutor herself. Otherwise the continuation capitalism of the author puts a leg in this book: Jilliane Hoffman's endeavors to make the murderer Cupid, known from an earlier novel, a brand that can be continued in addition to her investigators, greatly inhibits the development of the plot. ”( Denis Scheck , literary critic - TV show "Fresh off the press")

Others

  • Argus' predecessor novels are the thrillers Cupido ("Retribution") and Morpheus ("Last Witness").
  • Argus remained among the Spiegel bestsellers for several weeks.
  • The serial killer 's nickname Argus refers to a creature in Greek mythology. Argus was a giant with many eyes who was considered particularly vigilant. Investigators involved associate the screens from which the snuff club members are watching with the giant.
