Company history

The British journalist Jan Nasmyth (1918–2008) began in 1970 with the publication of the market report Europ-Oil Prices , which appeared weekly and was reproduced using a mimeograph . In 1976 he first used the name Argus in it . The breakthrough came in 1979 when it switched to daily appearances during the upheaval in the oil market caused by the revolution in Iran . Nasmyth had two employees at the time and his office was the basement of his house in Hampstead . In 1985 Nasmyth sold the majority of his company to Adrian Binks, who also took over management. The descendants of Nasmyth (including the biologist Kim Nasmyth ) held a total of just over 49% in Argus Media in 2011, while Binks held 30.9%. The rest of the shares were in the hands of management.

Sales in the 2010/11 financial year amounted to GBP 55.7 million, profit before tax was GBP 19.1 million, a pre-tax margin of 34%. In 2011, according to the audited annual financial statements, 351 people were employed. According to the company, this number rose to 600 employees by 2014, who work in 19 offices worldwide.
