features

butterfly

The moths reach a wingspan of 28 to 34 millimeters. The upper side of the forewings is colored chestnut brown and dusted gold. The metallic, silvery shimmering, teardrop-shaped flaw in the middle is mostly divided. Between the flaw and the inner edge as well as at the apex , fields with strong metallic gold shimmering stand out clearly. The upper side of the hind wing is colored gray-brown and shows a slightly darkened area in front of the outer seam. There is a dense tuft of hair on the head of the butterfly. The body is furry and has other smaller tufts of hair.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars are green in color. They show several very thin white back and side lines.

Distribution and occurrence

The distribution area of Argyrogramma verruca stretches from southeast Canada through the east of the USA and Central America to Argentina . The species prefers to colonize tropical areas.

Way of life

The moths fly in several generations, mainly in October. In Florida they can be found all year round. They are nocturnal and fly to artificial light sources . The pheromone produced by the females was collected and identified by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry . If necessary, it could be manufactured in a laboratory and used in pheromone traps . The leaves of a large number of lower plants as well as maize ( Zea mays ) and tobacco ( Nicotiana ) serve as a food source for the caterpillars .
