Ari Abraham Offenberg (born December 9, 1914 in Berlin ; † February 24, 2007 there ) was the long-time chairman of the Israelite synagogue community Adass Yisroel in Berlin .

Life

Offenberg was able to emigrate with part of his family before the anti-Semitic persecution , while the other part was murdered by the National Socialists . In the 1960s he returned to Berlin with his family. Together with survivors of the Holocaust and their descendants, he began to rebuild the community in 1985, which he led as chairman until his death. In the early years this was a loose connection between East Berlin and West Berlin Jews who could only have limited contact because of the Wall , but from December 1989 he led a congregation with the old rights, which as a corporation under public law allowed independent Jewish life in Berlin and Germany. He continued a tradition, as his grandfather Abraham Offenberg co-founded the church, and his father Haiman Offenberg helped lead it. His son Mario Offenberg continues the family tradition and works as the community manager.
