Arieh Iserles
Arieh Iserles (born September 2, 1947 ) is an Israeli mathematician who deals with numerical mathematics and especially numerics of differential equations.
Iserles studied at the Hebrew University and at the Ben Gurion University of the Negev , where he received his doctorate in 1978 under Giacomo Della Riccia (Numerical Solution of Stiff Differential Equations). He was a post-doctoral student at King's College, Cambridge. 1986/87 he was an associate professor at the University of Arizona . He has been a Lecturer since 1987 , Reader since 1995 and Professor of Numerical Analysis of Differential Equations at Cambridge University (DAMTP) and Director of the Cambridge Center for Analysis (CCA) since 1999 .
Among other things, he deals with highly oscillating systems, geometric integration (e.g. discretization methods for symmetries of Lie groups), exponential integrators and asymptotic developments in differential equations, calculation of matrix exponentials and isospectal flows while maintaining the Lie-Poisson structure.
In 2012 he was invited speaker at the European Congress of Mathematicians in Krakow. In 1999 he was Onsager Professor in Trondheim and in 2012 he received the David Crichton Medal. In 2014 he received the SIAM Prize for Distinguished Service to the Profession.
He is editor of Acta Numerica and the IMA Journal of Numerical Analysis. From 1997 to 2000 he was President of the Society for the Foundations of Computational Mathematics.
