Ariel Magnus (born October 16, 1975 in Buenos Aires ) is an Argentine writer and translator with German ancestors.

Life

Ariel Magnus grew up in Buenos Aires, where he attended a German school . With a scholarship from the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung , he studied Romance studies and philosophy in Heidelberg and Berlin from 1999 to 2005 . At the Humboldt University in Berlin , he also worked at the chair for Spanish literature . Today Magnus lives as a writer and literary translator in Buenos Aires.

Create

Magnus wrote for the Colombian men's magazine SoHo and the magazine Gatopardo, which is also published in Colombia, as well as the supplement Radar of the Argentine daily newspaper Página / 12 . He currently writes regularly for the El Ángel supplement of the Mexican newspaper La Reforma and occasionally for the Argentinian cultural magazine La mujer de mi vida and the German taz .

He has published five books so far, the most successful of which is the novel Un chino en bicicleta . For this work, which is about Chinese immigrants in Argentina, he was awarded the 2007 La otra Orilla international literary prize. It has been translated into numerous languages. Magnus also received the Premio Iberoamericano Juan de Castellanos de novela breve for his novel Muñecas ("Puppets") .

In 2006 he published a book about his German-Jewish grandmother Ella Michel from Westhofen ( La abuela , German two long johns from the Hering brand , 2012), who survived the Holocaust after voluntarily following her mother to Theresienstadt and Auschwitz.
