Pilsbry & Vanatta , 1891

The ariolimacidae are a family of slugs from the subordination of terrestrial snails (gastropod). The few species are restricted to the west coast of North America.

features

The representatives of the Ariolimacidae are without exception nudibranchs with worm-shaped bodies. They are stretched out to about 20 cm long. The intestinal cavity extends over the entire length of the body. The housing is reduced to a flat shell plate which is completely covered by the jacket. With a few exceptions, the sole is divided into three parts in the longitudinal direction. The pharynx and tentacle muscles attach to the diaphragm and unite in the rear part. The hermaphroditic genital apparatus lies in front of the last, foremost fold of the intestines. The penis and epiphallus are still present and not reduced as in many other families of the Arionoidea.

Geographical distribution and way of life

The few species in the Ariolimacidae family occur only on the west coast of North America. The distribution area extends from Alaska in the north to California .

Systematics

The family is divided into the two subfamilies Ariolimacinae and Zacoleinae by Bouchet & Rocroi (2005). Most authors do not recognize the latter

  • Family Ariolimacidae Pilsbry & Vanatta, 1898

Despite the name, they are not closely related to the snails (Limacidae). It must also not be confused with the family of the field snails (Agriolimacidae).
