The Arirang Festival is a North Korean mass event held at the May Day Stadium in Pyongyang and is named after the ancient Korean folk song Arirang .

The Arirang Festival shows the history of North Korea through mass dances and mass gymnastics. Over 100,000 people are involved in the event. Episodes from the revolutionary past are re-enacted in a precise mass choreography on the lawn, such as B. the deeds of the two leaders Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il , as well as the great state of development of the present from a North Korean perspective. On the grandstand behind the dance or gymnastics formations sit tens of thousands of other participants who draw huge pictures from individual colored cardboard cards, which have the effect of a large screen. The Arirang Festival has been listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest event of its kind since 2007.

The event usually takes place in spring and autumn of each year, but there are always irregular exceptions to this rule. For 2011, the period from August 1st to September 9th was planned.

Exceptionally, visas for citizens of South Korea are issued to visit the Arirang Festival . For some years, this time was the only way in which entry for US tourists was approved, but they have been able to enter all year round since 2009.

Similar mass events take place more often in North Korea, e.g. B. on public holidays in the Kim-Il-sung-Stadion . In the spring of 2011, a new event called the Grand Magic Show took place in the Rungnado May Day Stadium , which was based on the presentation of the Arirang Festival.
