The Arisdorftunnel is a motorway tunnel in Switzerland . The two-tube tunnel measures 1380 meters or 1340 meters in length and is located on the A2 motorway (Basel – Chiasso) in the canton of Basel-Landschaft between the Arisdorf and Sissach motorway junctions . It crosses under the wooded, hilly foothills of the Table Jura near Basel.

Construction and renovation

The tunnel was officially opened in 1970, making it possible to bypass the densely populated Ergolztal near Liestal . The choice of this route, however, placed an ecological burden on the largely original valley of the Aris villages.

In 2005, the tunnel was renovated in two stages from April to June and from September to December and adapted to the new safety standards that have been in force since the fire in the Gotthard tunnel. During the renovation, one tube was blocked. The innovations include fans at the tunnel entrance, lights embedded in the floor, improved lighting, traffic lights, speed displays that can be adapted to traffic, cameras, fire alarm cables, improved escape route signaling and a total of 13 SOS boxes. The road surfaces were also renewed. The renovation costs were around 34 million francs.

The maximum speed in the tunnel was 80 km / h. This was increased to 100 km / h in April 2006.

use

The traffic volume in the tunnel is among the highest in Switzerland, as the tunnel is on the north-south traffic axis between Germany and Italy. Around 53,900 vehicles pass through the Arisdorf tunnel on average every day.

Speed control

From mid-September 2010 to January 2011, a section speed control (AGK) was in test operation at the tunnel in the south direction . The system visually detects the vehicles before entering the tunnel and after exiting them and calculates the average speed over the 1.5 kilometer route. The system is not used for vignette control or searches. The test operation ended on January 13, 2011 and the system for monitoring the maximum speed in the tunnel was activated. If a vehicle exceeds the speed limit, a photo is taken to identify the driver. The data will be forwarded to the police. If a vehicle is driven correctly, the recordings are immediately deleted.
