Aristonous (sculptor)

Aristonous ( ancient Greek Ἀριστόνους ) was a Greek sculptor of Aegina , the v 6 in late or in the first half of the 5th century. Was active.

He is mentioned by Pausanias as the creator of a statue of Zeus , which Metapontus donated to the Zeus sanctuary Olympia as a votive offering . Pausanias describes the statue as a deity facing east, armed with a lightning bolt and an eagle and garlanded with lilies, but states that he knows neither the teacher nor the artist's creative period. He describes a similar statue with an unknown creator as a votive offering from Leontinoi . This type of image appeared for the first time since around 530 BC. BC, was used in sculpture, in small sculptures and on coins up to the middle of the 5th century BC. Chr. Continued and then disappeared completely. The creative period of Aristonous can therefore be limited to this period.
